The Blue Blooded Portfolio is made possible in cooperation with Denimhunters Denimhunters.com
The Blue Blooded Portfolio is our humble attempt to promote the Individual passionate people in denim, Retailers and overall Industry.
Consequently, we are at the Burg und Schild afterparty during the Fashion Week in Berlin https://www.burgundschild.com
The store is packed with cool people dressed like only too few dares to do. The buzz is authentic, the music just right for the occasion – beer and rum seems to be a mandatory part of the celebration. I like that! This is the perfect spot to kickstart a project like The Blue Blooded Portfolio! WHAT A CROWD!
Firstly – We’ll upload new pictures every week – if you are not up yet rest assure it will get up on the wall eventually! Secondly, all pictures have been uploaded in website format and size. Feel free to reach out to me for a larger format – hence better quality!
As a result of Berlin, we have some 72 perfect portraits with us home from Berlin – and we hope to post new portraits every week!
On location in Berlin.
We create a photobooth like situation in one of the fittings rooms – simple setup. Backdrop from Indigo People, one light and a wobbly stool. I not here to do the portrait! I’m here to do my interpretation of every girl or guy willing to participate. I have less than 5 frames to get it right because I don’t want to spoil the party – you know! It’s in situations like this a master in phycology comes in handy. Because I need to get close – some struggle when having a portrait taken – but not with me. We as photographers need to give back immediately and long before the final picture has been processed. I try to give back times a thousand not afraid to show my appreciation to whoever is in front of the camera. I hope you can see what the effect is below!
In the end, I collected 72 rad people on the sd card – which now is the backbone and the best possible kickstart to The Blue Blooded Portfolio. Every fantastic face will be up here over the coming weeks. I can already promise you’ll amazing picture, in fact, I did very little honestly and I’m very humbled to even be part of this crowd on this specific night.
Why Denim
To clarify, to me it is very simple! I was not allowed to wear denim as a kid I truly think this is the essence. If for any other reason I think Thomas from Denimhunters said it so wisely in his book BlueBlooded –
‘I was just fascinated by the idea of how the jeans in my hands had been shaped by the jobs men had done in them. I’m still fascinated by that – would you not be?
The Blue Blooded Portfolio is about passionate people. People with a passion for denim in combination with either a military/workwear/biker look – the creativity is enormous and yet very controlled. It’s about style and the very opposite of fast fashion.
I don’t believe in sustainability if the product is not good enough – but this crowd doesn’t have to think about being sustainable – because they have been sustainable since always!
The Blue Blooded Portfolio is a project we believe will go on many years forward. I for one look forward to follow the crowd and style everywhere we go, hereby collect a wide variety of situations where we meet the individuals. The denim crowd is about fading – this project is about following the beautiful fade of the individuals themselves.
Since we started the project already more than 100 people have accepted the challenge and hereby willingly took a sit to be a proud member of the portfolio – this makes Thomas and I very proud!
We started this project collecting pictures in the category ‘Portraits’. Over time we will widen the scope and embrace closeups of the fit, accessories, EDC (every day carry) and of course lots of full figure fashion portraits.
A little about the location – Burg und Schild.
Moreover, perhaps the most interesting denim and workwear store in Berlin. They are carrying the most important brands in denim, leather and boots. Men’s apparel and denim goods with American and Japanese denim and a few drops of the finest from Europe.
Likewise, the atmosphere is always very cool and if not for a rather busy schedule one would easily spend an hour here. Getting a good cup of coffee or beer for that matter. Getting advice or being educated in everything from quality, the right fold or how to wash the perfect pair.
Firstly, the store is located in an area known to this crowd. Secondly, in an area with a lot of similar retailers offering good quality products.
To whom that might be interested in the techniques, the setup for the first pictures is a one-light setup. The aim is to get a photo booth look to the batch of pictures and to get similar poses to secure a unified look.
The aim has been to capture 3 poses of every sit – and max 6 pictures of one single person. Some really know the poses, but most need to be directed.
The Aperture is 1.4 and ISO in 80 (natively) – I’m shooting on Nikon D850 with the Nikkor 85mm. The Speedlight is the Profoto A1. Later as the project develops I’ll start shooting on my Leica as well. I might even start shooting some series on a medium format film camera. More about this later.
Over the next year, I’ll start a similar project, collecting people and stories. If you are interested in this kind of work and what to hear more about how to develop a similar concept for your family, business, sport and something completely different don’t hesitate to reach out for more information or inspiration on mr@oddhunt.com.
